Steps to Using a Dash Cam

Step 1: Installation
The first step is installing the dash cam that you bought. Most dash cams are easy to install. Mounting the device inside your vehicle depends on the area. If you want it on the dashboard when using any kind of adhesive tape will do.
And if you want it on your windshield for a higher view, then use suction cup holders and fasten the camera on.
Step 2: Power Supply
The dash cam is usually connected to the car’s battery. You just have to wire the dash camera to this power supply.
There are other routes to connecting it to a power supply. One is to wire it to the cigarette lighter outlet for power. Another is to connect it by USB cable found in some modern cars.

Step 3: Turning It on
Once your dash cam has a connection to a source of power, you can try turning it on. Some dash cams turn on automatically when you start your car. It begins recording right at that moment and stops recording when your car isn’t running anymore.
But there’s also a feature called “parking mode”. This is the opposite setting from the default one. Here the camera starts recording when your car is idle or not moving. It’s for recording footage when your vehicle is parked.
Step 4: Loop Recording
Loop or continuous recording is something that’s programmed into dash cams. It will keep recording even when the memory is full. When this happens, the footage at the beginning will get erased, and the space created will be made for new footage. This is automatic and can’t be undone.
But the advantage here is that old footage that you won’t need will get replaced. So, you won’t need to go through the entire memory card to erase it every time to use it the next time. It will manage that task on its own.
Step 5: Footage Reviewing
Since the footage is recorded automatically and continuously into the memory card of the dash cam, all you need to do is take that SD card out. Just insert the card into an adapter and connect it to your computer and view it with any video player you have on your computer.
Also, note down that most dash cam footage videos come in the “.avi” format.
Step 6: Dual Cameras
Dual cameras are also known as 360-degree cameras. These have 2 cameras on the opposite side facing in two different directions. The dual cameras record both the inside and outside of the vehicle at the same time. These are the best dash cam for the front and rear.
This wouldn’t be the best motorcycle dash cam since there’s no interior to record on a motorcycle. But if you need a dash cam to record surrounding scenery on the road for media purposes, then you can keep the 360 lenses side to side instead of front and rear.
Step 7: GPS Logging and Speed Detecting
There are some complex and expensive dash cams available that do more than just recording video. These complex dashboard cameras can also track GPS and speed. They’re usually used by people of the law rather than regular citizens.
By using the GPS tracking system, the police or investigators can find missing people, whether they’re adults or children. It’s even used by taxi companies to track drivers who drive off with the company vehicles. This way, they can file reports and insurance claims.
The speed detector is for police who are handling highway speed limit laws and making sure there aren’t any drivers driving over the speed limit so that they can stop them and give them speeding tickets or arrest them.
Step 8: Night Vision Mode
You’ll find night vision settings on dash cams as well. Dash cams with a WDR or Wide Dynamic Range feature give a low light setting on the camera. You can adjust the exposure yourself so that it can pick up footage in the dark.
Also, you can use LED lights on dash cams to make night vision easier, even though it gives poor video quality.
